Photography by Charles Gupton Cheryl Burkam Hight is a native of Tampa, Florida. Cheryl and her husband Sam, reside in rural Louisburg, N.C. just 35 miles Northeast of Raleigh. They have a daughter Stephanie who resides in Raleigh. Cheryl began her career as a photographic artist with Barringer Studio in Rocky Mount, N.C. her senior year in high school, under the tutelage of Rusty Spears. In 1975 she married Sam and moved to Virginia. Her occupations included working for The Virginia Department of Health and also freelanced with area photographers. A friend and teacher, Jean Malish, introduced Cheryl to the art of painting on porcelain in 1981. And it wasn't long before she found herself moving from florals into portraiture on porcelain. In 1987 the family moved to Sam's"old family home place," and within a year Cheryl began working in Raleigh for the Department of Corrections with the Parole Commission for 10 years. Feeling the need to build her photographic art career, she left and started working part time for a private business and then in 2002 she made the transition as a full time artist. While Cheryl has had no formal training she has developed her ability through classes and workshops and she enjoys teaching and sharing her knowledge with others. When she is not painting, Cheryl and her husband, Sam, are involved in breeding and raising Welsh Pony hunter prospects, with their 2003 imported Welsh stallion, Pajon's Buccaneer. They enjoy spending time with their daughter, Stephanie, who works for Cisco Systems, and their “extended children”, Shane, and his wife Caroline, and 3 year old “granddaughter”, Lexy…. who is looking to be a chip off her Mimi's block with the art and the horses !
