Horse hair Pottery by artisan

Cheryl Hight

Caroline specializes in taking tail hair, to create that unique, one of a kind artistic memorial or memento of your special equine companion. The horsehair used in her jewelry can be supplied from your favorite equine or she can use her own supply of horsehair. Horsehair braiding is believed to have originated in the 8th Century by the Spaniards and has evolved in to the many styles and designs that are found today.

Cheryl uses porcelain slip or clay to make original pieces used in creating her horsehair pottery. After the piece is bisque fired, it is reheated and brought to a temperature of approximately 1025 degrees and removed from the kiln where individual strands are randomly placed across the pottery leaving a carbon imprint to achieve the unique design. The history of horsehair pottery was believed to have been the result of a Pueblo potter who upon removing a hot piece from kiln, her hair fell across the pottery and left the carbon imprint.
